“It was a tough-as-nails millscale, but when we hit it with Garnet — it came off like butter.”
—Arturo, Project Foreman
BACKGROUND
Tasked with blasting a new crude oil tank, our client experienced a myriad of difficulties. The tank alone was 46ft in diameter and 21ft high with extreme milscale on it.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
Achieve specified surface cleanliness and roughness standards
Increase productivity without increasing labor costs
Ability to complete original project deadlines on-time
Generate considerable savings in production costs
Increase production capacity
Reduce abrasive consumption
RESULTS
The client first started off with KleenBlast 36 mesh slag on the underside of the roof. Which is the 46 diameter, and about 3 1/2 feet down the sides – 2,200 sqft. They used 12 – two ton bags of slag. And the blasting took them four days with two blasters.
Next we tested GX2, achieving a 3 ½ mil profile. They did 10 1/2 feet up the side of the tank all the way around out the inside of the tank – 1,500sqft using less than 3 bags. Blasting in one day with two blasters.
CONCLUSION
By switching to GMA ToughBlast, our client used 10 times less abrasive and achieved 60% greater productivity. Labor in hours blasted was also reduced from four days to one days, without increasing staffing.
“We started off this project using a 35 mesh slag, blasting the underside of the roof and three-and-a-half feet down the sides,” Arturo, the project Foreman said. Blasting this 2,200 square feet roof, this contractor had taken four days with two men, and used 24 ton of slag. It only took my two men one day to blast completely around the tank, 1,500 square feet — using only two ton of abrasive. Needless to say, we ordered Garnet to finish the rest of the tank.”
