BACKGROUND
It was standard operating procedure in Catlettsburg to schedule a full month to blast and paint any of the facility’s petroleum tanks. Of course, a full month out of service results in a lot of foregone production and revenue.
The facility owner advised that the contractor was using industry standard blasting equipment and medium slag abrasive. The contractor of hired by the refinery over many years. The refinery maintenance team and the contractor trialed a new blasting process using high performance blasting equipment, air dryers, efficient blast pots, new nozzles and a different abrasive called GMA SpeedBlast.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
Achieve specified surface cleanliness and roughness standards
Increase productivity without increasing labor costs
Ability to complete original project deadlines on-time
Generate considerable savings in production costs
Increase production capacity
Reduce abrasive consumption
RESULTS
Surprisingly, the blasting was completed within two days. The contractor used 80% less abrasive then previously used— and subsequently produced less waste. The total job cost ended up being 60% below budget.
CONCLUSION
Instead of taking an entire month to refinish the facility’s petroleum tanks, our client could have the tanks up and running in less than two weeks. Overhead costs were extremely reduced.
“Downtime immediately halved — the tank was back online and in use twice as fast.” — Maintenance Manager
