PROJECT DOWNTIME MINIMISED WITH THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF DUST SUPPRESSION
SYDNEY, NSW
Transurban, a toll road operator, was undertaking a tunnel widening project at the Epping Section of the M2 to change the road from two lanes to three lanes.
During the project, boring into the tunnel wall was required, which led to the production of massive amounts of dust.
The road header bored away at the tunnel wall in order to create an extra lane.
Due to the amount of dust produced, this 10 month project would lead to decreased visibility in an already dark tunnel. Additionally, the dust could cause health and safety issues for workers and nearby residents.
The project objectives were as follows:
The project faced the following challenges:
To address the challenges, BlastOne recommended using a mobile dust collector.
A mobile 20,000cfm Dust collector was able to follow the road header on night shifts, ensuring a high level of dust suppression, and then drive back to the compound 5 kilometers away – this was very important for the client.
The implementation of the mobile dust collector resulted in the following:
The final result was zero project downtime and the highest level of dust suppression. Contractors could work safely in the tunnel while road boring was being carried out.
The solution provided a high level of dust suppression, improved visibility for workers and drivers, and maintained the project bottom line by ensuring zero project downtime.
Dust collection units are an important component for blasting site environmental and personnel safety. The removal of dust and other hazardous air particles protects the employees on site, while also preventing harmful contaminates from escaping into the atmosphere without relying on personal respiratory equipment alone.
A dust collector is used to provide ventilation inside containment structures to maintain operator visibility and maintain the encapsulated area under a negative pressure. It is also important to dilute the levels of hazardous substances within the contained area to levels below the minimum requred protection factor for personnel within, as well as respirator equipment limitations.
Many older coatings contain a high percentage of lead which when pulverized into powder by abrasive blasting can form a hazardous and toxic dust. Company legal obligations on project sites are now requiring that a full dust-tight containment structure encapsulates all blasting operations to minimize the danger to personnel and the environment.
Dust drops into the hopper of the collector and is transferred by a screw conveyor to a conveniently located dust outlet for easy transfer to a receptacle for disposal.
The next step up in mobility — if you have a long project duration (2+ months), the yard towable trailer gives the ultimate site portability. While it needs to be loaded on a trailer to be delivered to the site, once onsite, it can be moved easily, as required. The ultra-heavy duty wheels & axels will last you many years of hard service.
Highway Towable Trailer
The ultimate mobility. Perfect for projects that are short in duration (under 2 months). The highway towable trailer means that the dust collection system and power/fan unit are all mounted on a highway certified trailer meaning that the unit can be moved anywhere at any time.
